Plans to resume and complete construction of the long-stalled Kakamega County Teaching and Referral Hospital have gained fresh momentum following a high-level meeting between Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya and Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa.
The meeting, held last week, focused on drawing a collaborative framework between both levels of government to operationalize the 750-bed capacity Level Six facility, which has remained incomplete for years.
In the aftermath of the meeting, a technical team from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), led by Lt. Col. Dr. Joash Mommanyi, conducted an inspection of the hospital site. The delegation was received by Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Savula, who also chaired the briefing session before leading the officials on a tour of the construction works.
Speaking during the visit, Savula said the county is actively engaging state agencies to unlock pending flagship projects. “We are working closely with strategic partners to complete key infrastructure projects that have been pending for too long. The hospital is essential to improving access to healthcare in the region and beyond,” he stated.
Once operational, the facility is expected to ease congestion in regional hospitals, strengthen emergency services, enhance medical research, and create job opportunities for professionals and residents.
The KDF team is expected to compile and forward a detailed report to President William Ruto to inform the next phase of the project.
Governor Barasa has made the completion of the Kakamega Teaching and Referral Hospital a top priority under his healthcare agenda.
