Kakamega County, through the Department of Water, Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change, has today empowered local farmers in Idakho East Ikolomani with modern beehives in a move aimed at promoting climate-smart livelihoods and environmental conservation.

The distribution exercise, held at Shitoli Polytechnic, was presided over by CECM Mrs. Peninah Mukabane and supported by the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) programme. Farmers drawn from various wards, including 10 groups, benefited from the initiative which includes both equipment and training on modern apiculture practices.

Speaking during the event, CECM Mukabane emphasized the County Government’s commitment to sustainable development through practical, community-based solutions to climate change. “This is not just about honey; it’s about creating sustainable livelihoods and protecting our ecosystems,” she said.

She further thanked the World Bank for supporting County projects, noting that the funder contributed KES 291 million while the County added KES 109 million. Mrs. Mukabane urged residents to take full ownership of the project, highlighting beekeeping as a profitable, low-risk venture with an already available market.

She concluded by encouraging farmers to also care for the environment by planting flowers and promoting biodiversity as part of sustainable honey production.

The initiative supports Governor Fernandes Barasa’s Strategic Pillar on environmental conservation and Wealth creation.
